Senior Partner Christopher D. Kelley Forms Organization to Help Financially Disadvantaged East Hampton High School Students Prepare for College

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK — Christopher D. Kelley, Senior Partner, Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin & Quartararo, LLP, has formed a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance for local high school students preparing to go to college.

Mr. Kelley launched the East Hampton Level Playing Field Foundation (EHLPFF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping rising juniors and seniors at East Hampton High School (EHHS) who need financial assistance for college counseling and standardized test preparation. EHLPFF also provides mentoring for students and advice for parents about the college application process and covers the costs of college visits.

Mr. Kelley, EHLPFF’s President and Founder, helped form the group after reading an article on two 2018 East Hampton graduates, Valedictorian Alexander “Nick” Sigua Pintado and Salutatorian Jonathan Gomez Barrientos, both of whom were immigrants whose families had very limited means.

“In the article, one of the students noted he was unable to pay for ACT/SAT coaching,” he said. “It occurred to us that, while we lavish so much scholarship money on graduating seniors to help defray college costs, there should be a role for assisting income-qualified students leading up to senior year, possibly beginning in sophomore year, to get into college.”

In August, EHLPFF awarded its first scholarships in the amounts of $3,000 to $10,000 to five EHHS rising juniors and seniors: Daniela Chavez, Judah D’Andrea, Rose Pillco, Jocelyn Prieto and Raymond Siguencia. “We wish to congratulate these students on being the first recipients of the EHLPFF scholarships,” Mr. Kelly said. “This will provide the needed financial assistance to those students looking to get into top-tier colleges.”

Donations may be sent to EHLPFF, 727 Accabonac Road, East Hampton, NY 11937. For students who wish to apply for a scholarship, or for more information, visit https://ehlpff.org. For more information on Twomey Latham, call (631) 727-2180 or visit www.suffolklaw.com.

Eastern Long Island-Based Trademark and Copyright Attorney Explains How Business Owners Can Protect Their Company Name or Brand

Kathryn Dalli

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK — Kathryn Dalli, Partner, Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin & Quartararo, LLP, is available to speak on how business owners can protect their name or brand by obtaining a federal trademark registration.

Ms. Dalli says that registering a trademark for the name of a business or its brand with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) provides protection in all 50 states. However, there are certain instances where you will be unable to obtain a federal trademark for your business. “If your trademark conflicts with a prior registered trademark or one that has been applied for in your channel of trade — that is, your area of business — the mark cannot be federally registered,” she says. “Also, if your name is descriptive of the services you offer, you will be unable to obtain a trademark for each service on the USPTO’s principal register.”

Two other instances that may preclude a business owner from federally registering the company name or brand are if the business involves the sale of marijuana and cannabis products (which are illegal under federal law), and the company does not do business outside its locality.

“In these instances, in which you cannot get a federal trademark, it might be better to obtain a state registration of your mark, which affords some protection,” Ms. Dalli says.

Ms. Dalli urges those who apply for a registered trademark to be patient, but also to be proactive. “The review and application process can take a year or more, and there is no guarantee that your application will be approved,” she says. “It is also your responsibility to monitor the status of your application. If you are thinking of obtaining a federally registered trademark for your name or brand, the best advice is to seek the assistance of a trademark or intellectual property attorney.”

Ms. Dalli concentrates her practice in intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright infringement and unfair competition, as well as complex commercial litigation, real estate and foreclosures. She is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and a former Co-Chair of the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Intellectual Law Committee.

East End Law Firm Spreads Holiday Cheer by Donating Over 30 Meals to Island Harvest

Donations Help Local Families in Need

In giving back to the community this holiday season, Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin & Quartararo, LLP donated more than 30 meals to Island Harvest Food Bank. The donated food was picked up at East Wind Long Island in Wading River, where the Firm held its annual holiday party on December 17. By working together with East Wind and Island Harvest, Twomey Latham has helped feed local families in need, which continues a firm tradition of supporting food pantries.

Founded in 1992 by Linda Breitstone, Island Harvest has become Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. The volunteers and staff deliver millions of pounds of quality surplus food — that might have otherwise gone to waste — to a network of 570 Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens and nonprofit organizations that offer feeding services for those in need. Since its inception, Island Harvest has delivered 130 million pounds of food, supplementing 108 million meals.

The donations signify Twomey Latham’s active involvement in the communities it serves, including pro bono services, charitable giving and volunteer work.

“The culture of caring and compassion extends to all areas of the Firm,” said David M. Dubin, Senior Partner, Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin & Quartararo, LLP. “We give back to the local community because we are the local community. It’s where we live and work. It’s where we raise our families. We are deeply involved because we understand the importance of being an active part of the Long Island community, especially during the holiday season. It’s at the core of the Firm’s philosophy and has been since our inception.”
