EAST MEADOW, NEW YORK — Russell I. Marnell, of The Law Offices of Russell I. Marnell, P.C., has been named to the New York Metro Super Lawyers list for the fifth year in a row in the practice area of Family Law. He has offices in East Meadow and Smithtown.

Mr. Marnell is admitted to the bars of New York, California, Nevada, and Florida; the United States Tax Court, and Federal District Court. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the Matrimonial Committees of the Nassau and Suffolk County Bar Associations, and the New York Family Law American Inns of Court. He passed all parts of the CPA exam.

He has litigated over 700 cases to trial, including those involving complex custody, equitable distribution, child support and maintenance issues. In addition, he has given numerous presentations before legal and professional organizations on the topics of divorce, prenuptial agreements, custody and child support. Mr. Marnell is also a contributing writer to many legal publications, including Nassau Lawyer, Suffolk Lawyer and New York Law Journal.

His involvement in the community include his membership in the Kiwanis of the Bellmores (past president), the East Meadow and Melville Chambers of Commerce, the Huntington Lawyers Club, Attorney Round Table (ART) of Long Island, and the Nassau County Bar Association, where he serves on the Board. As a member of the Kiwanis of the Bellmores, he provides legal services to the organization for their annual Strawberry Festival and Bellmore Street Fair.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Albany, a Master of Business Administration in Accounting from Hofstra University School of Business and a Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law.

EAST MEADOW, NEW YORK — Russell I. Marnell, of The Law Offices of Russell I. Marnell, P.C., was a presenter in a program entitled “Issues of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias Related to the Practice of New York Family Law” during a New York Family Law Inn of Court meeting, which took place on April 17 at the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola.

 

Mr. Marnell discussed what implicit bias is, how it affects people generally, and, more specifically, how it can affect diverse professionals in the field of family law. The program also outlined what can be done to combat implicit bias and its effects.

 

In addition, Mr. Marnell published an article, “‘Double Dipping’ Considerations in New York Divorce,” which appeared in the May 2019 issue of Nassau Lawyer. In the article, Mr. Marnell wrote that, in double dipping, the income stream is counted twice: once for asset distribution, another for determining alimony payments. If a business owner is involved in a divorce case, and is the sole employee, the court may deem the business as a marital asset and may determine maintenance based on the income generated by the business. However, if the business employs other people, the court cannot subject the business to double dipping.
