On October 26, Women of Color in Film will hold a fundraiser at Comedy in Harlem, located at 750A St. Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will include a teaser screening of “Women of Sugar Hill,” a short-film documentary featuring Attorney Lauren P. Raysor.
The film will feature Ms. Raysor and other women who grew up in Sugar Hill. The purpose of the film is to highlight the stories of women connected to Sugar Hill, shedding light on their resilience and impact.
Ms. Raysor is an accomplished attorney concentrating her practice in personal injury, bankruptcy, civil rights and matrimonial law. She previously served as Corporation Counsel for the City of Mount Vernon, overseeing the City’s Law Department and managing a wide range of municipal legal matters. Ms. Raysor has taken over 35 cases to verdict and has successfully argued before the Appellate Division, including the notable case of Makeda Barnes Joseph vs. Universal Music Group. In 1993, Ms. Raysor became a part of the New York City Law Department, serving as Deputy Chief and Senior Trial Counsel, where she managed negligence cases brought against the city.
The fundraiser will also include a live scene performance of “Carolyn Smith,” a screenplay pilot slated to begin shooting for February 2026. There will also be live musical performances from jazz vocalist Clarissa Sinceno and aah fro blú. Kim Larué will be the guest host.
In addition to film screenings and music, there will be food, raffles and a cash bar.
This event is a collaborative fundraiser created by women in the film industry — actors, producers and directors — dedicated to raising money for women-focused film projects. The mission of Women in Film is to create jobs, internships and educational opportunities that empower women in film.
