Larry McCord and Associates LLC, Urges Parents to Speak to School Officials If Child Is a Victim

Monday, October 7, 2013

Oct. 7, 2013 - PATCHOGUE, N.Y. -- A common problem for many students as they begin the school year is bullying. Larry McCord, Founder, Larry McCord and Associates LLC, says parents should be aware that there are many forms of bullying, and, if their child is a victim, they should immediately address the situation with a school principal or school administrator. If the school fails to act upon the complaint or does not sufficiently remedy the situation, the parents should seek legal recourse.

Aside from physical bullying (such as punching or hitting), other methods of bullying include verbal bullying (teasing or name calling), indirect bullying (gossip or rumors that can damage a student’s reputation), and cyber bullying (attacking the victim through social media).

Mr. McCord is also reminding parents that October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This month-long campaign is sponsored by STOMP Out Bullying, whose goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages.

“If your child is being bullied, let them know that it is okay to talk to an adult about it,” says Mr. McCord. “Parents should also be aware of the different signs that their children may be bullied; these include complaints of stomach aches or other physical ailments, and insisting they do not want to go to school.”

“If the student continues to be victimized, it will negatively impact their education, which they are entitled to receive while in school,” Mr. McCord says. “If the bullying persists, contact the principal or administrator, and keep records of all of your conversations. If their response is not satisfactory, or if they do not respond at all, please contact an educational law attorney.”

Mr. McCord concentrates his practice in education law, dealing with students’ and teachers’ rights and parental rights. He also represents parents and students with school suspensions, staff members at superintendent (3214) hearings and clients at Child Support Enforcement (CSE) and Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS) cases. He is also a certified school teacher and served as a personnel committee chairman of a local school district, school board president, district attendance teacher and hearing officer.
