Winner Receives $1,000 Scholarship for Advancement in the Field of Gerontology, Courtesy of A Place for Mom

Melville, NY — Jennifer Wilson, an employee with the law firm Tully & Winkelman, P.C., has been named one of 10 finalists eligible to win the 2014 Senior Care Innovation Scholarship, hosted by A Place for Mom. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship from the organization for advancement in the field of gerontology.

Three hundred applicants competed to write the most compelling essay about innovations in senior care in preparing for America’s “Silver Tsunami” of aging Baby Boomers. In her essay, Ms. Wilson writes that the best way to address the growing number of seniors in this country is through increased education and advocacy. She described how the firm uses the Life Care Planning Model to help seniors in planning ahead before they are stricken with a disease such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Ms. Wilson also urges seniors and their caregivers to seek the assistance of a legal professional for the creation of a Last Will and Testament, Health Care Proxy, Power of Attorney and a Living Will.

In making a personal contribution to the “Silver Tsunami” situation, Ms. Wilson, who is pursuing her Master’s Degree in Social Work, is in charge of maintaining the law firm’s ElderCare Resource Center, a website which provides more than 1,700 resources to seniors and their families, and writes weekly articles for an elder law blog. “Through these two outlets, I am able to assist seniors and their caregivers,” Ms. Wilson wrote in her essay. “I firmly believe that knowledge is power to better navigate their lives and make informed decision. It is important that information is accessible to the growing number of seniors as they enter this new chapter of their lives and the Internet is a great way to do this.”

Launched in 2000, A Place for Mom gives the elderly and their families an easier way to find senior care. Through its compassionate senior living advisors and online resources, seniors and their loved ones are equipped with the knowledge family members need to make informed decisions and feel less alone as they face many challenges caring for their aging loved ones.
